Bacteriological Quality of Some Streams Used for Domestic Purposes in Ogoniland, Rivers State, Nigeria

Water occupies an important place in the performance of many vital activities such as circulation, excretion, reproduction, and various other metabolic that take body. This study aims to assess bacteriological quality surface water sources used for domestic purposes by rural communities Khana Local Government Area (LGA), Rivers State, Nigeria. The analysed streams include Bianu, Kaani-babbe, Kor, Kpong Lubara. samples from were collected once a month three months. Standard Microbiological procedures performed analyze total heterotrophic bacteria, Shigella- Salmonella, feacal coliform counts determined using most probable number (MPN) technique. results bacterial ranged from; 1.47 ± 0.19 x 107 cfu/ml 4.60 2.74 CFU/ml. Total 1.49 0.50 105cfu/ml 5.39 2.03 105 faecal coliforms 0.00 4.05 2.16 103 Salmonella-Shigella 2.23 1.4 ×103CFU/ml 4.03 1.77 × mean range bacteria MPN 1.08 9.08 1.60 00MPN/100ml. Faecal 3.9 3.6 8.66 6.35 MPN/100ml. Thirty- nine (39) species belonging thirteen (13) genera identified, which include: Staphylococcus aureus (7.7%), Klebsiella (2.6%), Proteus Bacillus (12.8%), Salmonella (5.1%), Serratia (10.3%), Pseudomonas Escherichia coli (23.0%), Enterobacter (5.1 %), Shigella Flavobacterium Chromobacterium (2.6%) Micrococcus (5.1%). these is not safe drinking uses because its low-quality thresholds. Therefore, require further purification ensure potability uses, there urgent need supply area, prevent outbreaks waterborne diseases communities.
